At just five years old Maria had a stroke, a terrifying incident where one side of her body went limp. The cause was sickle cell anemia, a disease in which red blood cells are rigid and sticky preventing them from bringing oxygen throughout the body. This form of anemia is not curable. Maria comes to CHEO regularly for transfusions to help her manage the pain and complications that can result from the disease.
Watch her story to learn how this brave little girl lives with this condition.
