Catherine, 13, is studious, an avid reader and has always loved to dance and swim. Around the age of nine her family doctor diagnosed Catherine with mild scoliosis which is an abnormal curvature of the spine. Catherine’s spine started to twist as she grew and quickly became a huge concern. An x-ray showed that her spinal curve was 63 degrees in her mid-back. Dr. Smit, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at CHEO had the solution – a relatively new procedure called vertebral body tethering. Catherine was the second patient to have this operation at CHEO.
